A Brief History of 1st. E&R

On May 31, 1938, the Classis of North Carolina, now called the Southern Synod, voted to sponsor the organization of a congregation in Asheboro under the leadership of Reverend A. Odell Leonard. The Synod appropriated funds for the project. On June 12, 1938, with thirty-eight present, the first public service was held. The congregation was organized on July 3, 1938 with forty-four charter members present.

Land on the corner of Cliff Road and Randolph Avenue was purchased for a building in late 1938. The building was started in April 1939.

The congregation emphasized service to God and the community during the coming years. The men and women of the church worked hard and long hours to improve and finish the inside of the church building and to improve and beautify the yard.

A parsonage was purchased in 1953 and the educational wing was added to the church in 1957.

The church constructed an adjacent 6000 square foot fellowship hall in 1986.

The fiftieth anniversary celebration and homecoming of First Evangelical and Reformed Church was held on June 12, 1988.

We thank God for his blessing during the past years and we praise His Name as we lift our hearts to Him and set our minds on greater accomplishments in His Kingdom through His Church and by faith.
